This study tests a gel called GELCLAIR that you swish in your mouth to help prevent or reduce painful mouth sores caused by radiation for head and neck cancer. If you are starting daily radiation for a certain type of throat or mouth cancer, this trial may help make your treatment more tolerable.

Who can take part
- You have a type of head and neck cancer called squamous cell carcinoma in the oropharynx (back of throat) or oral cavity (mouth).
- Your planned radiation treatment uses at least 60 gray (Gy) daily, with or without chemo.
- You are likely to develop moderate-to-severe mouth sores (oral mucositis grade 2 or higher) from treatment.
- You can read and understand English.
- You do not already have a feeding tube in place before starting this study.
