Who can take part
- You are 18 years old or older.
- You are scheduled for surgery that will last more than 2 hours under general anesthesia, and it is either abdominal surgery (done with a camera), surgery where you lie on your stomach, or you have a BMI over 35 (obese).
- The ventilator (breathing machine) used during surgery has advanced monitoring features.
- You will need a temporary tube placed in your stomach (gastric tube) either because the surgery is long or to help with the procedure.
- You do not have any medical reason that would prevent placing a tube in your esophagus or doing a lung recruitment maneuver.
