Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 65 years old.
  • You are severely obese (body mass index 40 or higher, or 35 or higher with obesity-related health problems).
  • You are scheduled for elective heart surgery (like bypass, valve repair, or both) that uses a heart-lung machine.
  • You will go to the cardiac intensive care unit after surgery and are expected to have the breathing tube removed within 6 to 12 hours.
  • You can provide written consent to participate.
