This study looks at two substances in the blood (tau and GFAP) to see if they can help predict brain or nerve problems after heart surgery in children. If your child is having heart surgery with a heart-lung machine at Boston Children's, they may be able to join.

Who can take part

  • You are under 18 years old.
  • You are having heart surgery that uses a heart-lung machine at Boston Children's Hospital.
  • Your surgery is planned (not an emergency) with more than one hour to discuss the study.
  • You are not in a critical, life-threatening condition (ASA 5).
  • You do not have a blood disorder or cancer.
  • You are not a Jehovah's Witness.
  • You are not on a breathing machine before surgery.
