Shingles and Dementia Risk Study

Herpes Zoster (HZ)Vascular Dementia

This study looks at whether the virus that causes shingles (herpes zoster) might increase the risk of dementia. Participants with a fresh shingles rash will give blood samples and attend several follow-up visits over one year.

Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You have a new shingles rash that has NOT been treated with antiviral medicine.
  • You can return for follow-up visits at 7 days, 1, 3, 6, and 12 months.
  • You are willing to have blood drawn.
  • You have not had the shingles vaccine in the last 8 years.
