Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older
  • You are on a breathing machine in the intensive care unit (ICU)
  • You have a lung problem called acute hypoxemic respiratory failure (low oxygen levels)
  • Your carbon dioxide levels are normal or only mildly high
  • You have been on pressure support ventilation (a type of breathing help) for at least 24 hours and up to 72 hours
  • You have an arterial line (a tube in your artery) to take blood samples
