Who can take part

  • You must be 18 years or older.
  • Your blood oxygen level must be very low (PaO2/FiO2 ratio of 200 or less).
  • You must be on a breathing machine that lets you breathe on your own (pressure support mode) and your breathing efforts must be strong enough (occlusion pressure over 5 cmH2O).
  • You cannot have a nerve or muscle disease that affects breathing.
  • You cannot have a history of needing long-term oxygen therapy at home.
  • You cannot have a collapsed lung (pneumothorax), muscle paralysis, or certain stomach/chest conditions that would interfere with monitoring equipment.
