Who can take part

  • You are 18 years old or older.
  • You have a suspected or confirmed bacterial infection that may need antibiotics.
  • You have been in the Emergency Intensive Care Unit (EICU) for more than 3 days.
  • Your blood PCT level (a marker of infection) has been 0.5 ng/mL or higher at some point during your hospital stay.
  • You are not pregnant, and you do not have a very low white blood cell count (from chemotherapy or a bone marrow transplant) that would make antibiotics less effective.
  • You do not have a long-term infection (like endocarditis, bone infection, or tuberculosis) that requires a specific, prolonged antibiotic treatment.
