Who can take part
- You are 18 years or older and have a new infection that started while you were in the hospital or before you were admitted.
- Your doctors know where the infection is coming from (like the lungs or urine) and have treated the source if needed, such as removing an infected line.
- You have had a procalcitonin blood test both today and about 24 hours earlier.
- You do not have septic shock (very low blood pressure requiring strong medicines), long-term infections like tuberculosis, or certain infections that require antibiotics for a long time.
- You have not taken antibiotics in the 3 days before the study starts, unless your doctor says it is okay.
- You are not pregnant or breastfeeding, and you are not severely immunocompromised (such as from recent stem cell or organ transplant, HIV with low CD4 count, or very low white blood cells).
