PUFFINS brain health study for adults 50+
Part of Brain & nervous system, Heart & circulation clinical trials.
This study looks at how small blood vessel changes in the brain (called 'small vessel disease') affect thinking and memory over time. It may help us understand how to keep brains healthy as we age. If you are 50 or older and do not have any memory concerns, you might be able to join.
Summary written for real people, not researchers, by Clin2.
Who can take part
- You must be 50 years old or older.
- You should not have any current problems with your memory.
- You must have mild to moderate small vessel disease (visible on a brain scan).
- You need to be a suitable size for an MRI machine (not too large to fit comfortably).
- You must be able to read and speak English.
- You cannot have had a major stroke in the past (minor strokes or 'mini-strokes' are okay).

This study looks at how small blood vessel disease in the brain (called cerebral small vessel disease) affects thinking, memory, and overall brain health. Researchers will use MRI scans and other tests to find biomarkers that may help predict risk.
This study tracks people with cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) over time using MRI scans. It aims to understand how the condition changes and affects health, which could help improve future care.
This study looks at whether certain deep brain veins seen on MRI are linked to thinking and memory problems in people with small-vessel brain disease. It compares brain scan findings with cognitive (thinking) testing to better understand what may drive cognitive dysfunction.
This study looks at inflammation-related changes in people with “small-vessel disease” of the brain. It will follow participants over time to understand the condition better and see how brain symptoms may change.
This study tracks people with cerebral small vessel disease (changes in the brain's tiny blood vessels) to learn more about how the condition progresses. It may be a good fit if you are 50 or older and have had an MRI showing these changes.
This study builds a brain imaging biobank for people with “small blood vessel disease” seen on MRI. Your MRI results can help researchers better understand these changes and track new events over time.
