This study tests if adding a gentle electrical stimulation (called NMES) to standard physical therapy helps people recover strength faster after knee replacement surgery. It is for patients who go to specific UCHealth or Intermountain Health therapy clinics after their first total knee replacement.

Who can take part

  • You are doing your rehab at a UCHealth or Intermountain Health physical therapy clinic.
  • This is your first knee replacement on that knee (not a re-do).
  • You start outpatient physical therapy within 5 days after surgery and come to at least 3 sessions.
  • You do not have an implanted heart device, active cancer, or a blood clot in your surgical leg.
  • You haven't had a hip or other joint replacement in the 3 months before this knee surgery.
