Who can take part

  • You are 18 years of age or older.
  • You are scheduled for open thoracolumbar fusion (a type of back surgery on your mid- to lower spine).
  • Your surgery will use neuromonitoring to watch your nerves during the operation.
  • You do not have a history of serious heart disease, such as very weak heart pumping, a heart block without a pacemaker, or a significant irregular heartbeat.
  • You do not have kidney disease (GFR less than 30) or liver cirrhosis.
  • You are not allergic or sensitive to magnesium, and you do not have a neuromuscular disease like myasthenia gravis.
