Who can take part

  • You are classified as ASA I or II (healthy or mild systemic disease).
  • You will have a planned elective spine surgery on the lower back (1 or 2 levels) under general anesthesia.
  • You do not have serious medical problems such as liver disease, kidney failure, heart disease, blood disorders, or uncontrolled diabetes/thyroid issues.
  • You are not allergic to the study drugs (magnesium, dexmedetomidine, or the anesthetics used).
  • You are not currently taking magnesium supplements, long-term opioids, beta-blockers, or calcium channel blockers.
  • Your surgery is expected to last less than 4 hours and is not for scoliosis or on the neck.
