Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 80 years old
  • You are having planned (elective) spine or brain surgery with nerve monitoring planned
  • You have not taken magnesium (IV or supplements) in the last 2 days
  • Your recent blood tests are in the normal range for sodium, potassium, and magnesium
  • You do not have serious heart rhythm/conduction problems, severe lung disease, or severe kidney disease
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding, and doctors can get a good starting nerve test before surgery
