Who can take part

  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Need a TIPS procedure for conditions like bleeding from enlarged veins in the stomach or throat, fluid buildup in the belly or chest, kidney problems linked to liver disease, or blood clots in the portal vein
  • Doctor has decided you need a TIPS
  • Must not have severe heart failure or uncontrolled lung blood pressure
  • Must not have an active infection or late-stage liver brain problems (hepatic encephalopathy stage III-IV)
  • Must not be pregnant or breastfeeding, and must not have metal implants or a pacemaker
