Testing the recovery and lifespan of treated red blood cells

This study tests a new way to treat donated red blood cells (called INTERCEPT) to see how long they survive in the body and how well they recover. It may help make blood transfusions safer for people who need them.

Who can take part

  • You must be 18 years or older.
  • Your blood counts and chemistry tests must be within normal limits, or if slightly off, your doctor must consider them not a problem.
  • You cannot have a history of red blood cell disorders (like sickle cell disease, thalassemia, or G6PD deficiency) or autoimmune diseases that affect red blood cells.
  • You cannot have taken medications that weaken the immune system (like prednisone) in the past 28 days.
  • If you are able to have children, you must agree to use effective birth control during the study.
