Who can take part

  • You are having a second knee replacement (not the first one) and it is not due to infection.
  • You are 21 or older and generally healthy enough for surgery (ASA class I-III).
  • You have no history of alcohol or drug dependence.
  • Your BMI is under 45.
  • You are not allergic to the medications used (like numbing medicines, painkillers, or sedatives).
  • You have not taken strong painkillers (opioids) regularly in the last 2 weeks.
  • You are willing to have a nerve block and a small tube for pain medicine near your knee.
  • You can speak and understand English.
