AI to predict breathing tube need and weaning success in ICU

Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS)

This study is testing whether an artificial intelligence (AI) model can help doctors decide when a patient in the ICU needs a breathing tube (intubation) and when they can safely come off the breathing machine (weaning). If you are an adult in the ICU at risk of breathing failure, or you’ve been on a ventilator for more than 24 hours and ready to try weaning, this research may be relevant to you.

Who can take part

  • You are 18 years old or older.
  • You are currently in an intensive care unit (ICU).
  • You are at risk for not being able to breathe well on your own (respiratory failure).
  • You have been on a breathing machine (mechanical ventilator) for more than 24 hours and are being considered for coming off it (weaning).
  • You do not have a 'Do Not Intubate' (DNI) order in your medical chart.
  • You do not have a permanent brain or nerve condition that would prevent you from being weaned off the ventilator.
