Who can take part
- You are 18 years old or older
- You have been on a breathing machine (ventilator) for at least 24 hours in an ICU
- Your heart and blood pressure are stable with little or no blood pressure medication
- You have an adequate cough reflex and do not have excessive fluid in your lungs
- Your doctor believes you are ready to try breathing on your own
- You do not have a known neuromuscular disease like ALS or Guillain-Barré syndrome
