Nerve block to reduce artery catheter complications in heart surgery

Who can take part

  • You are scheduled for heart surgery that will require more than 100 minutes on the heart-lung machine.
  • Your ejection fraction (a measure of heart pumping strength) is less than 35%.
  • You have moderate or severe pulmonary hypertension (high blood pressure in the lungs).
  • You have not had a stroke or mini-stroke in the past.
  • You do not have a bleeding disorder, glaucoma, or allergy to numbing medicines.
  • Your body mass index (BMI) is 35 or less.

Nerve block to reduce inflammation during heart surgery in elderly

This study tests whether a nerve block in the neck (called a stellate ganglion block) can reduce inflammation and improve recovery in elderly patients undergoing heart surgery.
