Who can take part
- You are scheduled for heart surgery that will require more than 100 minutes on the heart-lung machine.
- Your ejection fraction (a measure of heart pumping strength) is less than 35%.
- You have moderate or severe pulmonary hypertension (high blood pressure in the lungs).
- You have not had a stroke or mini-stroke in the past.
- You do not have a bleeding disorder, glaucoma, or allergy to numbing medicines.
- Your body mass index (BMI) is 35 or less.
