This study tests whether a nerve block in the neck (called a stellate ganglion block) can reduce inflammation and improve recovery in elderly patients undergoing heart surgery. If you qualify, you will receive this block along with standard anesthesia, and the researchers will measure markers of inflammation in your blood.

Who can take part
- You must be 65 years or older
- You must be scheduled for non-emergency heart surgery
- You must not have dementia, a history of stroke, or cognitive impairment
- You must not have bleeding disorders, infections near the injection site, or anatomical issues preventing the block
- You must not be taking antipsychotic or antidepressant medications
- You must not have a very slow heart rate or complete heart block
- Your BMI must be 35 or less
- You must not be having a redo or emergency heart surgery
- You must not be on a ventilator or heavily sedated before surgery
- Your heart's ejection fraction must be 35% or above
