Who can take part

  • You are scheduled for off-pump coronary artery bypass (heart bypass) surgery through a cut in the middle of your chest.
  • Your health status is ASA class III or IV (meaning you have significant health problems but can still undergo surgery).
  • You are able to understand and agree to participate in the study.
  • You do not have a history of emergency or repeat heart surgery, and you are not having any other heart procedures at the same time.
  • You have no allergy to numbing medicines, no bleeding problems, and are not on blood thinners that would prevent these injections.
  • You have not been taking strong pain medicines (opioids) regularly before the surgery.
  • You have no severe liver or kidney problems, no infection at the injection site, and your body mass index (BMI) is 40 or less.
