Who can take part
- You are 18 years or older.
- You are having heart surgery (like bypass, valve repair, or transplant) and will stay in the hospital at least one night.
- You have a blood test for kidney function before and after surgery.
- You do not have severe chronic kidney disease (kidney function less than 60% of normal).
- You are not pregnant or breastfeeding, and do not have a do-not-resuscitate order.
- You agree to have a urinary catheter placed and be monitored for at least 12 hours during and after surgery.
