  • You are between 18 and 75 years old
  • You are in the ICU and will need a breathing tube for more than 48 hours
  • You do not have a lung infection when the study begins
  • You are not on any medications that weaken your immune system
  • You do not have chronic lung disease like COPD or asthma
  • You do not have dentures that could interfere with the suctioning
