Who can take part

  • You are already part of the main EMPASHOCK study.
  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You are in the intensive care unit for cardiogenic shock (when the heart can't pump enough blood).
  • You have been on medicines to support blood pressure (catecholamines) for at least 12 hours.
  • You can swallow tablets.
  • You are not currently on dialysis or have very poor kidney function.
  • You are not allergic to empagliflozin or similar medicines.
  • You do not have type 1 diabetes.
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you could become pregnant, you agree to use effective contraception.
  • You do not have certain heart conditions or situations that would exclude you (like being a heart transplant recipient or having shock from other causes).
