Who can take part

  • You must be in the intensive care unit (ICU) and on a breathing machine (ventilator) for at least 24 hours.
  • You must be ready for your first try to breathe on your own (called a spontaneous breathing trial).
  • You cannot have a tracheostomy (a breathing tube in your neck).
  • You cannot have a nerve or muscle disease that affects breathing.
  • The doctors must be able to get a clear ultrasound picture of your chest muscles.
