Short-term steroids for steroid-sensitive nephrotic syndrome

This trial tests whether a shorter course of steroids works well for adults with steroid-sensitive nephrotic syndrome. If you have this condition and your protein levels are very high, this study may help find a treatment that is just as effective but with fewer side effects.

Who can take part

  • You have high protein in your urine (protein to creatinine ratio of at least 3000 mg/g).
  • Your blood albumin level is less than 30 g/L.
  • You are 16 years or older.
  • You have not had prior steroid or immune-suppressing treatment for any kidney disease, except for the first 28 days of prednisolone given as standard care.
  • You have no other known cause for your kidney problems, such as a systemic disease or exposure to certain drugs.
  • Your nephrotic syndrome is steroid-sensitive, meaning it goes away within 4 weeks of taking prednisone or prednisolone at the usual dose.
