Who can take part
- You are in the intensive care unit (ICU) and arrived less than 24 hours ago.
- You have one of these serious conditions: sepsis, septic shock, cardiogenic shock, severe trauma (needing 4 or more blood transfusions in 6 hours), acute brain injury requiring brain monitoring, being brought back to life after cardiac arrest with at least 15 minutes of low or no blood flow, or severe pancreatitis needing ICU care.
- You have a special IV line (arterial or central venous catheter) that can be used for blood tests.
- You are 18 years or older.
- You do not have active cancer, and doctors do not expect you to pass away within the next 24 hours.
