Who can take part
- You must be 18 years or older.
- You were admitted to the intensive care unit within the last 24 hours.
- You have very low oxygen levels (between 92% and 98% on a pulse oximeter) even with high levels of oxygen therapy or high-flow oxygen.
- You or a close relative can give informed consent.
- You cannot have a condition that causes high carbon dioxide in the blood, heart failure, or a muscle disease.
- You cannot have had a breathing tube inserted within the last 7 days.
- You cannot be pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Your level of consciousness must be able to be assessed (Glasgow Coma Scale score above 12).
