Who can take part

  • You are 18 or older and in the surgical ICU.
  • You had a major abdominal surgery (like stomach or bowel surgery) and need ICU care.
  • You have been on a breathing machine (ventilator) for more than 48 hours.
  • You are clinically stable, meaning your breathing and heart rate are okay, and you are not expected to come off the ventilator in the next 6 hours.
  • You do not have a muscle disease that affects breathing, COPD, or other serious lung disease.
