Who can take part

  • You are 18 or older.
  • Your body mass index (BMI) is 35 or higher.
  • You are scheduled for a planned shoulder surgery (like shoulder replacement or rotator cuff repair).
  • You will receive a single injection of numbing medicine around the nerves in your shoulder area after surgery.
  • You are able to do a special breathing test called a maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) test.
  • You do not have severe lung disease, heart failure, or a nerve disorder that affects your breathing.
