Who can take part

  • You are in the medical ICU and on a breathing machine (ventilator).
  • You are receiving continuous sedation medication through an IV.
  • You do not have a history of long-term opioid use (like for chronic pain).
  • You do not have severe liver disease (end-stage liver disease).
  • You are not pregnant, not a prisoner, and not in refractory shock (very low blood pressure despite high doses of pressor medications).
  • You do not have any skin condition that prevents a small sensor from sticking to your forehead.
