  • You are admitted to an adult intensive care unit (ICU).
  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You need sedation for more than 24 hours.
  • You need a breathing machine (mechanical ventilation) for more than 24 hours.
  • You do not have a brain condition causing the need for a breathing machine, such as a recent cardiac arrest or severe liver failure.
  • You are not pregnant.
