This trial is testing whether taking sodium bicarbonate (a common ingredient in baking soda) during dialysis can help control a sudden rise in blood pressure that some people experience during their treatment. If you have this type of blood pressure increase, this study may offer a way to manage it.

Who can take part

  • You are on chronic hemodialysis (dialysis for kidney failure) for at least 3 months.
  • You have dialysis 3 times a week and your Kt/V (a measure of how well dialysis cleans your blood) is above 1.2.
  • Your blood pressure rises by more than 10 mm Hg during most dialysis sessions (at least half of them in the past month).
  • Your doctor says your body's fluid levels are normal, based on a physical exam and a special test (bioimpedance).
  • You are 18 or older, not pregnant, and can give consent. You do not have severe heart failure, recent heart attack or hospitalization, and are not planning a kidney transplant within 3 months.
