Who can take part
- You are between 65 and 80 years old
- You are scheduled for a laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery to remove part of your colon, expected to last 2 to 5 hours with a breathing tube
- You have a moderate risk of lung problems after surgery
- Your blood oxygen level on room air is 94% or higher
- You have not had pneumonia in the last month or used a breathing machine for an hour or more
- You do not have severe lung disease, large air blisters under the lung lining, or a nerve-muscle disease that is getting worse
