Who can take part

  • You are having planned, non-emergency surgery that is not on the heart or lungs
  • Your surgery requires general anesthesia (sleep medicine) and a breathing tube
  • Your lungs are healthy with no signs of disease on a baseline ultrasound before surgery
  • You can have a lung ultrasound within 2 hours after your surgery is finished
  • You are 18 years or older and able to sign informed consent
  • Your surgery does not involve the diaphragm (the main breathing muscle)
