Lung recruitment for older surgery patients

Acute Lung Injury

This study tests a breathing technique (called automatic lung recruitment) during and after laparoscopic stomach or bowel surgery. It aims to reduce lung problems in older adults. You may be eligible if you are 65 or older, having keyhole digestive surgery lasting over 2 hours, and have a moderate to high risk for lung complications.

Who can take part

  • You are 65 years or older.
  • You are in generally good health or have mild to severe health issues (ASA grade I, II, or III).
  • You have a body mass index (BMI) between 18 and 30 (normal to overweight range).
  • You are having laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery on your stomach or intestines lasting more than 2 hours.
  • Your oxygen level before surgery is 94% or higher.
  • Doctors plan to remove your breathing tube in the operating room.
  • Your ARISCAT score (a measure of lung risk after surgery) is between 26 and 44 or higher.
