Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 40 years old.
  • You have a body mass index (BMI) between 18 and 25.
  • You are in good general health with no major medical issues.
  • You do not regularly use alcohol or drugs (nicotine and caffeine are okay).
  • You have been diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizophreniform disorder and have not taken antipsychotic medication for more than 2 weeks total.
  • You are able to undergo an MRI and have no metal implants or other MRI exclusions.

Do antipsychotics block insulin action in the brain?

This study tests whether a single dose of a common antipsychotic medication affects how the brain responds to insulin, which could help explain weight gain and metabolic side effects. Healthy young adults will receive either the antipsychotic or a placebo, then have their brain activity measured with an MRI.
