Who can take part
- You are between 20 and 55 years old.
- You weigh more than 50 kg.
- You have never had malaria before.
- Your blood cells have a specific marker (Duffy antigen) that the parasite needs to enter.
- Your body processes certain medicines normally (CYP2D6 enzyme).
- You have a normal level of an enzyme called G6PD (tested before the study).
- If you are a woman, you must use effective birth control during the study and for 3 months after.
- You agree not to donate blood during the study and for 1 year after.
- You are willing to take anti-malaria medicine to cure the infection after the study.
- You must stay in a hospital in Bangkok for monitoring until treatment is finished and symptoms go away.
- You are willing to live in Bangkok during the main part of the study and be followed for 1 year after treatment.
- You can be reached by mobile phone 24/7 during the study period.
- You can read and write in Thai and understand all the study information.
- Your heart risk is low (less than 10% over 10 years per Thai guidelines).
- You have at least a bachelor's degree.
- You have no medical conditions that would make the study unsafe (e.g., severe heart, kidney, or liver disease).
- You are not pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning pregnancy within 1 year after the study.
- You do not have certain blood disorders like thalassemia or sickle cell disease.
- You do not have hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV, syphilis, or HTLV infection.
