Who can take part

  • You are a critically ill patient being treated in the hospital and have a tracheostomy tube.
  • You can breathe on your own with a machine that gives you extra oxygen for at least 24 hours.
  • You have a strong cough or gag reflex, which shows you can protect your airway.
  • You have a score above 8 on the Glasgow Coma Scale (a test of consciousness).
  • You are 18 years old or older.
