Who can take part
- You are over 18 years old.
- You need an ERCP procedure because of a blocked bile duct (from a benign or malignant cause).
- You have not had a prior cut to open the bile duct (native papilla).
- The doctor has found it hard to place the wire into the bile duct after trying for more than 5 minutes, touching the papilla more than 5 times, or accidentally going into the pancreatic duct more than once.
- You do not have a tumor or growth at the opening of the bile duct that makes standard access difficult.
- You have not had prior stomach or intestine surgery that changes the normal anatomy (like Billroth II or Roux-en-Y).
- You do not have a bleeding problem that cannot be corrected (INR over 1.5 or platelets below 50,000).
- You do not have active inflammation of the pancreas (acute pancreatitis) right now.
