Who can take part

  • You have advanced periodontitis (stage III or IV) with at least 5mm of attachment loss and deep pockets (6mm or more).
  • You are 18 or older, with low plaque and bleeding after initial gum treatment.
  • You have a bone defect between teeth that is at least 3mm deep on x-ray.
  • You are a non-smoker or smoke fewer than 10 cigarettes a day.
  • You are not pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning pregnancy in the next 6 months.
  • You have no uncontrolled health conditions like diabetes or recent antibiotics.

This study tests whether one of two treatments can improve healing of “intra-bony” gum/bone defects around teeth after deep cleaning. It may help some people with periodontal disease who have pockets deep enough to involve the bone but with certain health and dental conditions.
