Two gum treatments for deep bone defects in teeth

Intrabony Periodontal Defect

This study tests whether one of two treatments can improve healing of “intra-bony” gum/bone defects around teeth after deep cleaning. It may help some people with periodontal disease who have pockets deep enough to involve the bone but with certain health and dental conditions.

Who can take part

  • Be age 18 or older
  • Have periodontal disease treated with scaling and root planing soon before joining
  • Have a gum pocket between teeth that is at least 6 mm deep, with bone support affected (3 to 6 mm)
  • Have an intra-bony defect that is not “contained” (1-wall or 2-wall defect) in the upper or lower jaw
  • Be able to come back for a 6-month follow-up and follow study instructions
