This study tests whether a safe, noninvasive brain stimulation technique (called tDCS) can help people with vision loss from retinitis pigmentosa, rod-cone dystrophy, or advanced glaucoma move around more easily and safely. Participants will do walking and orientation tasks while receiving the stimulation.

Who can take part

  • You have vision loss from retinitis pigmentosa, rod-cone dystrophy, or advanced glaucoma that narrows your side vision.
  • Your vision (with glasses or contacts) is at least 20/40 in your better eye, but your side vision is limited to no more than 50 degrees in each eye.
  • You are 18 or older and able to understand and follow instructions.
  • You do not have dementia, cognitive impairment, or balance issues from another condition.
  • You do not have epilepsy, a pacemaker, metal in your head, a brain tumor, or take certain psychiatric medications.
  • You are not pregnant or trying to get pregnant, and you are willing to use your own white cane if you have one.
