Who can take part

  • Your child is between 6 months and 7 years old.
  • Your child is scheduled for elective (non-emergency) heart surgery through the breastbone.
  • Your child has not had this type of surgery before (no redo sternotomy).
  • Your child is in a stable condition before surgery as assessed by the doctor.
  • Your child does not have a serious neurological disorder that would make it hard to assess pain using behavior scales.
  • You or your child's legal guardian will give written permission for the trial.
