Who can take part

  • You are 18 years old or older and in the intensive care unit.
  • You are on a breathing machine (ventilator) for less than 72 hours.
  • You have a small tube in your artery to monitor blood pressure continuously.
  • Your carbon dioxide level in the blood is between 35 and 45 mmHg (a normal range).
  • You are able to get a clear ultrasound signal through your temple to measure brain blood flow.
  • Your doctor thinks it's safe for you to receive a short increase in oxygen.
