Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You have been admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) in the last 48 hours.
  • You have a new type of breathing failure that needs high-flow oxygen through nasal tubes.
  • You have a fast breathing rate (over 25 breaths per minute) or work hard to breathe.
  • Your oxygen level is low (PaO2/FiO2 ratio of 200 or less).
  • Chest X-ray shows cloudy areas (called alveolar opacities) in one or both lungs.
