Fasting before surgery and delirium risk study

Postoperative Delirium Perioperative Fasting

This study looks at whether how long you fast before and after surgery affects your risk of delirium (sudden confusion) afterward. If you are having surgery and can stay in the hospital for at least 3 days, you may be able to join.

Who can take part

  • You are 18 years old or older
  • You are having surgery with general or regional anesthesia (you will be asleep or numb)
  • You can communicate and follow simple instructions after surgery
  • You are expected to stay in the hospital for at least 3 days after surgery
  • You do not already have confusion or severe memory problems
  • You will not go to the intensive care unit (ICU) after surgery

Sleep and brain training before heart surgery to prevent delirium

This study tests whether a combination of sleep therapy, brain games, and light exercise before heart surgery can help prevent confusion or disorientation (delirium) after the operation. Participants will be asked to use a tablet and fitness tracker daily for about an hour before their surgery.
