Who can take part
- You are at least 18 years old.
- You have received a kidney transplant.
- You are willing and able to give written consent to participate.
- Within the first month after your transplant, you had a urine test showing a high level of bacteria (10^5 CFU/mL or more).
- You do not have any major blockages in your esophagus or stomach.
- You are not allergic to penicillin-type antibiotics.
- You do not have certain rare metabolic conditions (like problems with carnitine processing).
- You are not of Faroese descent (both parents born in the Faroe Islands).
- You do not have porphyria (a blood disorder).
- You are not taking medications like valproic acid, probenecid, or methotrexate.
- You are not on dialysis more than one month after your transplant.
- You are not pregnant or breastfeeding.
