Using a simple blood test to track metabolism in septic shock

Who can take part

  • You are an adult with septic shock (a severe infection that causes dangerously low blood pressure).
  • You have been on a breathing machine (mechanical ventilation) for at least 3 days in a row.
  • At the time you were admitted to the ICU, your kidney function was not extremely poor (creatinine level below 4.0 mg/dL).
  • You do not have chronic kidney disease that requires dialysis, and you have not started dialysis while in the ICU.
  • On the fourth day of being on the breathing machine, you do not need more than 70% oxygen to keep your oxygen levels stable.
